Iolani is the fourth largest independent school in America. Three of the four largest schools are in Hawaii: Punahou, Kamehameha and Iolani. Number three is the Westminster School in Atlanta, Georgia.
In rough numbers, Punahou has 4,000 students, Kamehameha 3,000 and Iolani 2,000.
Our graduating class is around 200 students. Our average instructional class size is 16.

Our present Headmaster, Dr. Val Iwashita, is our first head to have graduated from Iolani, class of 1967. He became head in 1995.
He is the second head not to be a member of the clergy. His predecessor, Mr. Thomas Miller, was the first.

Until the fall of 1979, Iolani was an all-boys school.

Iolani possesses one of the original horseshoes worn by Seabiscuit in his celebrated race against War Admiral at Pimlico on November 1, 1938. Father Kenneth A. Bray, who coached football at Iolani from 1932 to 1953, wrote to Charles Howard, the owner of Seabiscuit, and asked him for one of the shoes as a symbol of inspiration for his players. Iolani is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records for its 1981 huli-huli chicken barbeque at which Iolani students, parents, teachers and volunteers cooked 46,386 birds over open pit charcoal fires.

The Iolani cafeteria cooks an average of 150 pounds of rice every day, according to Dennis Li, former food service general manager. The cafeteria also makes and sells 180 spam musubi daily.
