When sophomore libero Brent Asuka '05 arrived at UC Irvine to play volleyball, he joined a program that would hardly be called a national power. Two short years later, the Anteaters are National Champions, thanks in part to the play of the 'Iolani grad.
On May 5, the Anteaters defeated Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne (IPFW) to take the title, Irvine's first in volleyball. UCI won 30-24, 24-30, 30-23 and 30-28.
Asuka was the MPSF and National Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, and earned Third-Team MPSF honors this season.
