'Iolani Varsity I Falls To Punahou, 6-4
October 3, 2008
by Al Linsky
As expected, the crowd was large and boisterous for this showdown for first round supremacy.

It was a very rough first half for the Raiders, though, as the Puns took control and scored five unanswered goals.
The Raiders went into the half time break down 5-0 and reeling.
But you could see that the Raiders came out with fire in their eyes and in no way were giving up.
Vincent Lim finally got the Raiders on the board soon after the second half started. At 2:42, Jacob Butters kept it going making it 5-2, and more importantly, showing there was a ray of hope.
At 1:01 of the third, the Puns got the lead back to four as the third quarter would end at 6-2, Puns.
At 4:40 of the fourth, Chase Weber would cut the lead to 3 at 6-3. Vincent Lim would score again 1:23 to get it down to 2, 6-4. But, the Puns played good defense down the stretch and that's how it would end.

'Iolani Varsity II Water Polo Over Punahou, 7-5
October 3, 2008
All matches, in any sport against Punahou are big matches. The intensity always seems to go up a notch on both teams.
The Puns got on the board first at 3:27 of the first quarter. But 'Iolani would bounce right back in a big way, scoring at 2:52 (David Jordan) and 1:41 (Steven Wall), ending the quarter at 2-1, Raiders.
The second quarter continued the momentum with Raider scores at 4:45 (Drew Limm), 2:35 (David Jordan again), and 1:16 (Shovan Datta).
The Puns would get one back right before the half ended to make it 5-2, Raiders, at the intermission.
Nick Goo scored at 3:41 of the third, 6-2. The Puns weren't finished, though, as they scored 2 quick ones to tighten the score to 6-4. Drew Limm hit paydirt at 2:44 of the fourth to give the Raiders some breathing room.
With 1:33 left in the game, the Puns got one back but it was too little, too late as the Raiders were able to clinch it at 7-5 for a hard-fought victory.

'Iolani Intermediates Win Big Over Le Jardin, 15-7
October 4, 2008
by Al Linsky
Stephen Jordan scored nine seconds after the game started.

It was a sign of things to come as the Raiders scored often as Le Jardin struggled to figure out how to stop the 'Iolani scoring machine.
Le Jardin would tie it at 3:50 of the first quarter, but exactly nine seconds later, Stephen Jordan would repeat his goal and make it 2-1. This would start a run of six straight goals, Stephen getting his hat trick, Ian White also getting the hat trick, and Zalman Bernstein adding one for good measure. The first quarter would end at 7-1 with the Raiders firmly in control.
The scoring pace would slow a bit in the second quarter with both teams getting two goals. Raider scores were by Michael Chen and Frank Heggeness. It was 9-3 Raiders at the half.
At 3:09 of the third, Michael Chen would score again to make it 11-3. Le Jardin then got a bit of a run going playing their best polo for a few minutes and scoring two. Timmy Leong then got two quick ones, followed by another by Ryan Chang to finish the quarter at 14-5, Raiders.

Le Jardin outscored the Raiders in the fourth, but it was too little too late as Jacob Baba got one and Le Jardin got two. I also missed a score somewhere, my apologies. Final score 15-7, Raiders.

Coach Bart's Summary and Advice
Aloha all,
Well, as Meatloaf said, "two out of three ain't bad." The varsity II team beat Punahou with solid team play, 7 - 5, and the intermediate team got two wins over the weekend against Pac-5 and Le Jardin.
However, the varsity I team suffered its first conference loss to Punahou, 6 - 4. The sentiment of Michael Jordan pretty much sums it up, "losing sucks!"
The intermediate team won the regular season championship and goes into the tournament as the number one seed. Two more wins and they back up their back-to-back championships with a third one. Good luck to them.
The varsity II team is back in the championship hunt as well with their victory. Two losses to Le Jardin hurt their chances, but now they're sitting in second place. Coach Tai Sunnland was overjoyed with the win because it was the first time he experienced beating Punahou as a coach, having done it before as a player only.
Re-group and move on are the thoughts of the varsity I team. There is still a lot of season left and obvious room for improvement, so a chance for a championship remains alive.
The team would like to send out mahalos to the pep band and student cheering section. Both were terrific and set a festive mood for the evening game. The boys only wish they could have made the night more enjoyable for all Raider fans with a victory. Oh well. Go surf, feel better, try again next time. Aloha
